Project Description

 

Goal:

The overall goal of the project "SP1-JTI-FCH.2009.5.5 LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA)" was to develop a specific guidance document for application to hydrogen and fuel cell technologies and related training material with courses for practitioners in industry and research.

It is foreseen that this guidance document will be applied to all projects funded by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) involving LCA in the field of hydrogen production systems and fuel cell technologies.

Objective:

The guidance document is based on and in line with the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) Handbook on LCA, coordinated by the European Commission's JRC-IES, through the European Platform on LCA

The ILCD Handbook is applicable to a wide range of different decision-contexts and sectors, and therefore needs to be translated to product-specific criteria, guidelines and simplified tools to foster LCA applications in the specific industry sectors. The FC-HyGuide project responds to this need by providing a guidance document on how to perform every step of a LCA for hydrogen (H2) production systems and fuel cell technologies.

Including hydrogen production and fuel cell technology specific examples the "manual" offers a step-by-step guidance for LCA practitioners in industry and research.

October 2010 until September 2011

 

Outcome:

  • Guidance Document, based on the ILCD handbook, for performing ILCD conform LCAs on hydrogen and Fuel Cell technologies
  • LCA data collection template (Supporting Material), tailor-made to hydrogen and fuel cell technologies
  • LCA study reporting templates, tailor-made to hydrogen and fuel cell technologies
  • Workshop and training courses on the developed guidance document
  • Website, as a fully integrated component of the ILCD Data Network
  • LCA case study data sets in the ILCD format, demonstrating the applicability of the guidance document
